COM 499 Internship Course Requirements & Application

All mass communications majors must complete a professional internship for 3 credit hours in the COM 499 internship course. Students are responsible for pursuing and securing their own internships; faculty and the position database are available for assistance.

Students are not eligible for COM 499 enrollment until they have identified a position that meets their program’s standards, then completed and submitted the below form for review by their academic advisor. If the position is approved, their advisor will get them registered in COM 499. If not approved, the advisor will reach out for more information.

Requirements for COM 499 credit: Internships must satisfy the below for professional experience, work hours, guidance, and portfolio production.

  1. Interns must complete at least 150 internship work hours during the academic semester when they’re registered for COM 499.
  2. Positions must focus on professional work that is relevant to the intern’s field of study.
  3. Interns must be supervised by someone with a professional background or education in their field of study, or a relevant field.
  4. Interns must produce a portfolio of professional work examples—relevant to their field of study—completed during their internship. Each concentration (PR, J&DMP and COM Studies) has its own portfolio requisites; students should review these with their academic advisor and their internship supervisor to ensure the position will satisfy these conditions.

Students can earn up to 6 credits in COM 499, 3 credits per semester. Students cannot earn more than 3 credits in a single internship position. If a student receives COM 499 credit in one position, they must secure a differentposition at a different company to earn any additional credits.

Students will not be enrolled in COM 499 after the drop/add date has passed. Review for each semester’s drop/add deadline.
